The standard of the German Idols competition (DSDS) this year is on par with the previous encounters, not better, not worse. What I do applaud is the manner in which the German public rates its judgement on the participants. I will not go into any details about judges vs participants or the participants amongst themselves, this is my neutral opinion on the artists displays of what I have seen this year.
The top 3 are worthy of their spot, although I believe that Dominik could just as well have been there in place of Sarah.
The issue I have with Sarah is her lack of understanding of the English language. Her English pronunciation over the past 5 weeks has been terrible to say the least! She does possess a great gift in her voice but how can you express yourself about the song you are singing if you do not even know what the words of the title mean?? During the 7th show, she was highly commended on her version of “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston, this to the extent of one of the judges saying that the effort was better than Whitney Houston herself, which is totally absurd. Not only does such a comment serve as an insult to one of the greatest female artists of all time, but it portraits a huge level of false sense towards the German Public.
Dominik has shown great character in his impersonation of James Blunt. In contrast to what some of the judges have said, I believe that being able to copy James Blunt to such perfection requires great skill & composure. James Blunt is one of the biggest Artists within the European Music industry, his sales records speak for themselves. However, the show is about finding new singing talent & a certain level of “own signature” should accompany the candidates in making their own brand.
Daniel Schumacher is the clear favourite to win the show & I would be very surprised if he does not.
Annemarie Eilfeld is clearly Daniel’s biggest threat in taking the title, this is my opinion based purely on her performances. Her language skills are better than all the other contestants & judges together and her English pronunciation & clarity is second to none. She seems to be enjoying the ride of the show & might be able to represent Germany better than Daniel on the international front.
Apart from the top 4, I believe Marc Jentzen was a bit hard done by with his early exit, he showed great promise.
I do not believe that Benny, Vanessa nor Holger should have been in the top 10. Benny should be part of a drag-queen act in Miami, Vanessa should have have entered Germany’s Got Talent (Super Talent) & Holger simply cannot compete on such a high level.

You know, I can't see any of them playing a role on the international front and maybe that's just as well. Because - do I really want to be represented by Annemarie, Daniel or Sarah? No, actually not.

I always wanted to learn how native speakers think about foreign artists performing english songs. I can imagine that this is a major problem to pronounce the English terms without any German accent!
So in your eyes, Annemarie has the best pronunciation?
I don't believe in any international success of ANY of the contestants. The concept of German Idol is not aimed in international business. The judge Dieter Bohlen is unknown outside Germany (maybe with exception of Russia and Asia). Unfortunately, he is the one who influences the televoting to the largest extent. And he is the one who expects earning money with the winner. But the latest German Idols proved that there is no hope for any of the winners to be successful in the long run!
